The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved an additional $79.5 million for the expansion of ongoing activities aimed at improving access to quality education throughout Cambodia.
The new fund will be used to expand a project to improve general education in Cambodia, which was approved in January 2022 with an initial funding package of $69.25 million, according to a World Bank press release on May 30.
The additional funding package includes a $60 million loan from the International Development Association, a World Bank fund to help the most in need, and another $19.5 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education.
The additional funding package will extend project activities to other educational institutions across the country, including 500 secondary schools, 1,000 primary schools, and 90 kindergartens. Key activities include:
1. Scaling up school-based management in the additional schools;
2. Providing more training and professional development opportunities for teachers, school leaders, and staff;
3. Constructing and renovating more classrooms, laboratories, and school buildings with climate-resilient design;
4. Piloting education technology to increase quality learning hours;
5. Modernising textbooks and developing teacher guides aligned with the national curriculum;
6. Strengthening sector planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
The same press release added that the project places strong emphasis on making it easier for children from disadvantaged groups, poor families, or ethnic minority communities, including those in remote areas or living with disabilities, to get to school and receive quality learning opportunities.
